The Christ Church is an Anglican church located in Stone Town.  It opened on Christmas Day in 1879.

This is a statute dedicated to the memory of those sold into slavery.  Original slave chains are part of the statute.

This is the second "slave pen".  Many individuals died in these two "pens" due to the terrible living conditions - overcrowding, disease, lack of food, etc.

This is one of two chambers in the Slave Market known as "slave pens".  If you look on the left-hand side, you can still see a shackle set in concrete.

This picture shows a young man in bondage as he awaits his fate. 

Zanzibar had a thriving slave trade from the 1800's.  It was the largest slave market in the Indian Ocean slave trade and was dominated by Arab slave traders.  This wall provides information about the attrocities committed at the Slave Market.  NOTE:  To see more detail, click on the image (it will take a few seconds to compile).  To return to this page, click on the Blue/White arrow in the upper left corner of the screen.

Here's the main entryway into St. Joseph's Cathedral.

St. Joseph's is a Catholic cathedral built by the French missionaries from 1893 to 1898.  Mass is still held on Sundays.

This lovely ornate door has Indian influences.  Note the brass studs which are meant to show the wealth of the resident.  It also has an arched top frame like those doors found in palaces in India.
