The painting dipicts the marriage at Waterford in 1170 of the Norman military adventurer, Richard de Clare, known as "Strongbow", and the daughter of Dermot McMurrough, King of Leinster. The union represents the formal establishment of a Norman foothold in Ireland. Conceived to decorate the Palace of Westminster, the painting is a represents the victorious Normans and the vanquished Irish. Strongbow places his foot upon a fallen Celtic cross, King Dermot looks on in alarm, and an elderly musician slumps on his harp.

These stained glass panels were created by Michael Healy RHA during 1924/1925.

In 1927, John Lavery agreed to assist the Currency Commission in the design of the First Free State banknotes.  He used his wife as a model for Kathleen Ni Houlihan, the heroine in a W.B. Yeats's play of 1902.  The artist later quoted W.T. Cosgrave, President of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State as saying:  "Every Irishman, not to mention the foreigner who visits Ireland, will carry one next to his heart."

This oil on canvas painting is by the Irish artist, John Lavery.  It features his wife, a daughter from her first marriage, their daughter and a maid from Morocco.  It also includes a greyhound dog.
