The imagery in this painting is graphic - the rattlesnake imprinted with dollar bills in the lower left and the wanted posters of criminalized (and therefore marginalized) subjects in the upper left. It contains natural, mythic and symbolic sources of heat and energy such as a volcano, the devil and a beating heart. The lower right focuses on Spanish and is believed to be inspired by a trip Wojnarowicz took to Mexico where he found more openness and civility than in America. The work is layered with personal and political meanings that address greed, violence and homophobia that Wojnarowicz perceived in American culture.
