Wojnarowicz was a fierce critic of what he saw as the degrading
of the environment and the ostricizing of outsiders. He used
images from industrial scenes interspersed with symbols that he
associated with fragility like blood cells, animals and
insects. He made this painting at a time when AIDS was
ravaging New York City's gay community.
