Preah Kahn, originally was a Hindu temple. It was built in the 12th century by King Jayavarman VII to honor his father. Neak Pean is an artificial island associated with Preah Kahn. It also was built by King Jayavarman VII. It was originally designed for medical purposes (the ancients believed that going into these pools would balance the elements in the bather, thus curing disease). It is based on the ancient Hindu belief of balance. Four connected pools represent Water, Earth, Fire and Wind. Each is connected to the central water source, the main tank, by a stone conduit "presided over by one of Four Great Animals - namely Elephant, Bull, Horse, and Lion, corresponding to the north, east, south, and west quarters. The East Mabon is a 10th century temple built during the reign of King Rajendravarman. It too stands on an artificial island. East Mebon was dedicated to the Hindu God, Shiva, and honors the King's parents. The temple was dedicated in 953A.D. All of these sites are amazing! Click on the first image to begin.
