The "Big Five" - Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhino - are each special in their own way.  One thing they have in common is that they were considered the most difficult animals to hunt on foot in the days gone by when big-game hunters actually shot and killed these beauties.  Thankfully, the term now refers to these animals as being the most prized to see and photograph while on safari.  Well, that is understandable as it can be difficult to find these animals.  The Big Cats blend easily into the tall grasses and are more active at night than during daylight hours.  The larger creatures can be equally difficult to find since they cover large territories often away from roads within Kruger National Park.  Also, the Rhino is an endangered species due to the poaching of its horn so their numbers are limited.   So, in a nutshell, when you're on a self-drive safari, you consider yourself very lucky to see the "Big Five".  Click on our favorite "Big Five" images from this trip.
